Have a book called The Australian Womans Diary 1994 which quotes from different magazines and articles of the 1800 and 1900's.
Love the following that was written by Joan Kyffin Willington called
Maisie: Her life in her letters from 1898 to 1902.
"A Beastly Job
Spent the morning ironing. I ironed the whole of my tussore frock. All the chiffon and whole skirt and bodice and even the three little frills of ribbon round the bottom of the skirt - you can have no idea of the tremendous amount of work in such an undertaking. It is beautifully clean still, so the ironing has made it look as good as new and put such a gloss on it and not a crease anywhere.
Then I did the same thing to my garden party frock and although it did not need so much doing I had to be still more careful because it is such a delicate material.
Then I pressed my blue cloth skirt - a beastly job - then ironed out two blouses that I had cruelly crushed before they were half dirty and finished up with a few ribbons and things like that.
Ironing is tremendously hard work and fearfully tiring.
After lunch I dressed for the mayoress's garden party. I wore my newly altered freshly ironed dear little garden party frock and my grey hat with real roses to match the frock."
What a wonderful insight into ironing. My Australian Womans Diary contains many of these treasures that I will write about more often.
